Non-collection of Garbage Posing Health Risks

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

More complaints are emerging from Port Moresby city residents on the overflow of neglected household garbage and waste in residential areas. They claim that their garbage have not been collected for at least a month now, and want city authorities to resume garbage collections immediately.

The overflowing of household waste, plastic bags and containers on wire bins has resulted in the piling of rubbish. Each day, new piles of rubbish are added to the already full wire bins.

Residents are now resorting to burning rubbish as a disposal measure to remove the waste.

Meanwhile, the NCD Waste Management Division is trying its best to collect rubbish on their collection days.

Failure by concerned authorities to collect rubbish on time, poses a health risk for residents. It creates a bad smell, and an eyesore to city dwellers and people coming in from other places.

As seen from across the road from a pile of rubbish, the drain is also filled with rubbish.

And with the onset of the rainy season over the next couple of weeks, these blocked up waterways, could create havoc for road users.
