Lae’s Angau Emergency Section Quiet Over Christmas

Lae’s Angau Accident and Emergency Section was quiet during Christmas Eve, as compared to previous years. Positive outcomes of the police roadblock operations and raids that have curbed binge drinking that have caused road accidents and fights during the festive season.

EMTV’s, Bethanie Harriman, was at the Memorial hospital till early Christmas morning.

Lae’s Angau Accident & Emergency Section had expected to deal with a surge of alcohol related accidents, however, the 24th and the 25th, normally hectic times in past years, were relatively quiet for the emergency department.

On the eve of Christmas, the head of the A&E unit Dr. Alex Piawi had issued a warning to residents to celebrate safely and to avoid accidents.

Staffs have also gone on holidays and the warning to residents of Lae city and surrounding areas is very much intact.

The ANGAU Memorial hospital was built in 1964 and officially opened on April 17. The historic health facility has very much deteriorated over the years but will undergo major renovations as one of the core conditions of the Australia-PNG asylum seeker deal with over K300 million earmarked for the project.
