Prince Charles sends condolences to PNG

The Prince of Wales has sent his condolences for the passing of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare through a message to Prime Minister James Marape.

‘My wife and I were profoundly saddened to learn of the death of Sir Michael Somare. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with all those who mourn his passing”

Prince Charles recalled his first visit to PNG in 1966 and in 1975 when he represented the Queen during PNG’s independence celebrations.

He described Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare as a wise elder who protected one of the planet’s most precious assets – our rainforests. Stating that without the Grand Chief’s international efforts, the Coalition for Rainforest Nations would not exist.

He and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall expressed profound sympathy to the people of Papua New Guinea during this time of mourning.

Further adding that Grand Chief Sir Michael’s enduring legacy of peace and all that he achieved with the Coalition for the Rainforest Nations will be maintained by generations to come.
