Matega becomes first Community in Pilot Project to meet UNICEF’s Healthy Living Criteria

Locals in Mageta Community in Goroka District say the introduction of the Healthy Living Concept by UNICEF and other partners have seen a decease in Children falling sick in Matega.

Since the implementation of the concept, locals are building proper pit toilets and setting up Handwashing Stations to practice clean hygiene.

Today locals received their Open Defecation Free Certificate from the British High Commissioner to PNG Keith Scott to signify their community meeting the 10 Healthy Home Criteria.

Matega is the first out the targeted 200 communities in Goroka District to be certified.

These projects aimed to improve healthy standards at community levels are faciliated by Touching the Untouched, a local NGO with UN Agencies implementing the facilities.

The British Government through the UK Aid has recently come on board to support these local incentive through funding support of K1 million.

Goroka District is one of the only three districts in PNG to be part of this program.
