In a partnership with Remington Group, PNG Cancer foundation is taking their fight against cancer into schools around the country through the Cervical Cancer Education Program.
With a vision to reduce the threat and impact of cancer in Papua New Guinea, the PNG Cancer Foundation (PNGCF) was formed with the purpose of improving coordination of cancer education and awareness through-out the country.
Through the Cervical Cancer Education Program, PNGCF aims to create awareness and educate students about the causes of cervical cancer and ways to prevent the disease into the future.
As it turned out, students who attended the program admitted to being unaware of the major causes of cervical cancer.
Head of Oncology Unit at Kimbe General Hospital, Dr Yvonn Sapuri, said kids need to be educated and empowered through awareness so they can be knowledgeable in the areas of cancer and understand the pathology and limitations we have in Papua New Guinea.
“This condition is preventable and so it is important that people understand what causes cervical cancer and how they can prevent it”, said Benson Bero, principle of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Secondary School, Vunapope.
Apart from the Cervical Cancer Awareness Program currently being carried out in schools across the country, PNGCF is also running its annual Pinktober Campaign to focus its awareness on addressing cancers that affect women.
