Road Development for Port Moresby North-east Settlements

By Staycey Yalo – EMTV News, Port Moresby

People living behind the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Air Transport Squadron (ATS) will have access to proper road service.

This long-awaited service was a welcome-news for the communities living in the area who have been struggling with the bush road for many years.

Port Moresby North-east MP, John Kaupa, as part of his 5 year development plan for his electorate, has included major road upgrades for many feeder roads in North-east.

There are about 6000 people who live behind ATS. The once one-lane narrow bush road has been cleared recently to pave way for the road upgrade from Oro Block all the way to Paraya 6.

North-east MP and Minister for Housing and Urbanisation, John Kaupa, says his electorate has many settlers, but he will not overlook the fact that they too are tax payers and deserve the same service every other tax payer deserves.

The road upgrade will also extend to other parts of the North-east electorate to Bush Wara, 9 Mile roads and to the CIS Bomana area.

With all feeder roads connected, Mr. Kaupa plans to do proper mapping of major settlement areas in his district under the urbanisation program.

So far, about 4 areas in North-east have been surveyed, and their plans are currently being reviewed by the Lands Department.

The new roads into the settlement areas will bring business opportunities for people operating PMV’s and also provide easy access for people into the city.

Mr. Kaupa stressed that the long term plan for people living behind the ATS area is for them to have their own schools, health centre and other vital services, as there is a growing population of people living there.
