By Vasinatta Yama, EM TV – Mt Hagen

Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (HERST) Minister, Pila Niningi, has committed K20, 000 to investigate the cause of a fight at Ialibu Secondary School in the Southern Highlands province.

A Grade 11 student from the Imbongu Electorate was killed during the fight last Tuesday. The fight has stopped, but tension is still high.

Police are yet to file a complete report of the Ialibu Secondary School fight which started last Tuesday evening.

A Grade 11 student was killed by another warring group, while two other students were seriously injured and are fighting for their lives at the hospital.

Four dormitories and an ablution block have also been set alight.

HERST Minister, Pila Niningi, visited the school yesterday and committed K20,000 to the police to fast track investigations and arrest those involved.

The Ialibu Secondary School is one of the oldest in the country, opened in 1974, a year before Papua New Guinea became independent.

The school has produced some of the country’s politicians like Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, HERST Minister, Pila Niningi, and the PNG Defence Force Commander, Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo.

Police say the fight started from a dispute over the school principal’s position.

Police are currently providing security at the school to ensure there is order in the school and the community.

Minister Niningi also told his people to change their mentality and allow services to flow.

He warned them that if they continue to fight, the constructing of Western Pacific University in Ialibu may be delayed.
