The people of Usino Bundi district in the Madang province will soon have water supply connected to their villages and communities.
The Usino Bundi district development authority said this will be the first proper water project for the District.
Usino Bundi MP, Jimmy Uguro, said over the next five years, the DDA will aim to improve access to potable water, sanitation and hygiene, to reduce morbidity and mortality.
Mr. Uguro also invited development partners to help deliver these basic services to the people in the district.
MP Uguro said the district had no water since independence and if this project goes off the ground, it will be a relief to his people.
“Poor health hinders people’s livelihoods and stops them from being able to fully participate in their communities. Water collecting remains largely the responsibility of women and children, who walk long distances to collect from wells, springs and rivers.
Furthermore, the lack of education within communities regarding sanitation and hygiene contributes to illness and mortality,” he said.
The proposed bore water supply and sanitation project is captured under the Ramu Nickel agreement.
