INFORMAL MARKETS SHOW INTEREST IN OPENING UP BANK ACCOUNTS TO SAVE MONEY

At least 30 informal markets along the Rigo coast in Central Province have opened accounts in a day through the Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEF) MiBank agent.

The YEF a non-government organization, and an agent of MiBank has been opening accounts for people in Gabagaba, Hula, Rigo coast and other villages in Central Province for the past weeks.

President of the YEF MiBank Agent Robert Yori, said the organization aims to reach the rural population where the bank cannot reach.

“We are the arms of the government and private sector and we are here to contribute to the Government’s target to register 500 SMEs by 2030,” Yori said.

Despite the interest for informal market owners along the Rigo coast to have a bank account, many of them still face challenges with mobile and internet banking.

YEF MiBank agent officer Keissy Ruage said, “We noticed that most of the informal markets are trade store owners and farmers and their challengers is they don’t know how to use mobile banking system and we are happy to help them.”

Ruage said the requirements for having an account is to the NID cards, driver’s license, mobile phones and they must be above 18 years.

“They should at least have a mobile phone, NID cards or driver’s license, those who do not have we help them to open their account.” she said.

An informal market woman Delly Leka, who opened her account was grateful for the opportunity stating that she can now save her money.

 “I am very excited because now I have an account where I can save my money, thank you to Youth Empowerment Foundation for the opportunity and bringing services to my door step,’ she said.
