Awareness Emergency

Heavy Rains and Storms

Sometimes a simple rainy weather can turn into an unexpected storm and floods that can be life threatening; it is important to keep a close watch of your local weather bureau for weather warnings.

WHEN A BAD STORM IS APPROACHING

  • chop down dead or threatening trees
  • fix loose boards and roofing irons
  • put rubbish bins where they cannot be blown about
  • put strips of tape across large picture windows
  • place support timber or wood tied with ropes on weak structures
  • avoid sailing out to sea when you notice bad weather or hear strong wind warnings

DURING THE STORM:

  • stay indoors
  • take cover in the strongest part of the house or a safe building in the community
  • beware of flying objects such as roofing irons
  • if you are at sea put on your life jackets and seek shelter at the nearest coast/shore or island
  • if you are driving, DRIVE SLOW WITH CARE and avoid driving through flood waters as six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control or possible stalling, while one foot of water will float most vehicles. If you cannot see clearly, it is best you find a safe spot to park while waiting for the storm/heavy rain to stop
  • avoid flood waters/area where power lines/electrical poles have fallen onto as the wires may be live and thus pose a risk of electrocution

GENERAL REMINDERS:

  • If you know that your street/area tends to flood because it is located in a low point, be sure to move your vehicles to higher ground whenever rain is forecast.
  • Residents with flooded basements or buildings should contact responsible parties while making sure main/all electrical switches are off
  • Keep a close watch of your local weather service office for weather warnings
  • Ensure street gutters and alleys are clear of trash and loose items that could potentially interfere with storm drainage thus causing floods. This also means avoid dumping rubbish into drains, which are supposed to be free for drainage during rainy weather
  • Stay clear of downed power lines; report them immediately to PNG Power (Ph:324 3200 or 7090 8000)
  • Make sure the emergency and first aid bags are ready
  • In case of heavy continued rain, follow weather forecasts on local media and social networking websites
