Lese Ilava Villagers Receive NID Cards and Birth Certificates

Service delivery in Papua New Guinea has, for many years, been based on estimated populations.

This was emphasized by the Registrar General for the Civil and Identity Registry Office, Dickson Kiragi, during the official declaration of Lese Ward as the Ward Registration Area for East Kerema, yesterday.

Civil and Identity Registry Officers have been in Malalaua District of Gulf Province for the past week to get the people of East Kerema especially the Lese Ward registered under the National Identity Registration Project.

63 birth certificates and 13 NIDs were presented to the first lot of Lese Ilava villagers who were registered two weeks ago.

This NID system aims at yielding information on daily, monthly and annual population counts. It will help the Department of National Planning and Monitoring to effectively make policy, plan and monitor implement government exercises.

The in-built memory system in the plastic card would contain personal information such as; date of birth, addresses, gender, photograph and a stored fingerprint copy for identification.

Birth certificates are also printed by project offices set up around the country.
