NRL: The Golden-point rule

While the Golden point rule may come as a bonus or a match-saving opportunity for some NRL Teams, others find it unfair, especially the losing team.

With the concept of giving the victory to the team that scores points first in the extra time, after drawing at full-time, Brisbane Broncos’ Veteran Coach and long-time Critic of the Golden point system, Wayne Bennett, once again voiced his dissatisfaction with the system.

This comes after the head to head encounter between his team, the Broncos and the Cowboys last Friday where they lost, by 20 points to Cowboys’ 21, in the extra time; Bennett said, if it’s a draw, that only shows how good both teams were.

Others argue the Golden point rule can be used during the finals but there is really no need for it during the season.

Even Man-of-the-Moment, Jonathan Thurston himself raised eyebrows, when he backed Bennett, saying, it would be fairer if both teams were awarded a point each if they draw at full-time before the golden point.
