Phonics Workshop To Equip Elementary Teachers in Milne Bay Province

by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

Milne Bay Provincial Education Division through its funds has supplied resource books for selected elementary schools in Milne Bay Province, to help elementary teachers teach Phonics at elementary schools plus support the new Standard Based Curriculum.

Under its new English Syllabus for Elementary schools, teachers are required to teach English at the school along with other subjects. But in order for the elementary teachers to fully understand how to teach Phonics at all grade levels, a two day workshop was facilitated.

A total of 250 teachers from the 100 selected schools gathered for the two-day workshop.

During the workshop, teachers were shown how to use the resource books in their teaching. They also participated in all necessary activities that were scheduled for the workshop to boost their understanding and knowledge. Each participant presented sample lessons to show they understood what was taught by the workshop facilitators.

From their participation, participants showed eagerness to learn all they needed to help them teach Phonics and common words at their schools.

With National Education’s drive with the new Standard Based Curriculum, the initiative taken by Milne Bay Provincial Division of Education will boost the teachers in their teaching, a way forward for improvement in the literacy standards in the province.

According to Mr. Joseph Tau, SPA Basic Education, Milne Bay Province Division of Education (MBPDE), “If elementary teachers implement the new Standard Based English Syllabus successfully, they will lay a firm foundation on which the primary and secondary teachers can build.”

At the end of the workshop, participating teachers were presented each with participation certificates.

The workshop was organised by Mr Joseph Tau, SPA Basic Education, Milne Bay Province Division of Education, in consultation with Mr Ray O’Farrell from Bilum Books.
