New Development Strategy Launched In Alotau

THE wisdom of the past is the way forward for PNG, according to Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, Charles Abel, who spoke at the launching of a new development strategy in Alotau on Tuesday.

Launched by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, the Addendum to the PNG Development Strategic Plan (PNGDSP) 2010 – 2030 seeks to undertake a paradigm shift by converting from a brown economy to a green economy.

The National Strategy for Responsible, Sustainable Development, hopes to shift the focus on resources, to maintaining sustainable livelihoods for the people, and to encourage young people to look at our resources for the future.

Under the Alotau Accord, penned at the formation of the current government, had one of its priorities, to review the country’s development plans.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, before launching the plan, said that the new strategy was a result of the commitments in the Alotau Accord, and the review that was conducted.

The strategy is now recognized, and ready for implementation, focusing on achieving an economy based on conservation, rather than extraction.
