NCDC Stops Betelnut Transit Permits

The Controller of the NCDC Buai Ban, Honk Kiap has stopped issuing transit permits to carry betelnut past the betelnut check points into the city.

The stop comes into immediate effect following a gross abuse of the arrangement that was put in place to address concerns on the requirement for betelnut, for traditional ceremonies or family gatherings in the city and other parts of Central Province.

Mr Kiap said the decision to stop the issuing of transit permits stems from a recent confiscation of more than 130 bags of betelnut at the Laloki Checkpoint.

Mr. Kiap expressed concern that the trust bestowed them was abused. “For this reason, I am stopping further issuance of transit permits until further advice,” Mr Kiap stressed.

The transit permits were approved by the NCDC Buai Ban Committee to issue to people who required the use of betelnut for traditional ceremonies or family gatherings on the request from leaders of Central Province.

The ban on betelnut is effected by NCDC in accordance with the NCD Betelnut Control Law 2013, forbidding all selling and consumption of betelnut in the city.
