Cassowaries defeated the Mariners by nine runs yesterday in day two of the Boroko Motors Isuzu men’s T20 Smash 2026.
After winning the toss and batting first, the Cassowaries posted 133/4 in 20 overs. The team built their innings around a patient and crucial knock from Hila Vare, who scored 59 runs off 64 balls, including one four and two sixes.
Vare combined with Dauncey Tom, who added a valuable 35 off 38 balls, to rebuild the innings. Their partnership resulted in a competitive total before Tom fell at 98/2 in the 17th over.
A late surge from Lega Siaka, who remained unbeaten on a blistering 23 off 10 balls, including three sixes, provided the finishing touch. He lifted the Cassowaries past the 130 marks, with support from Vagi Vani Morea at the close. The innings was further boosted by 15 extras.
For the Mariners, Michael Charlie was the standout bowler, claiming 2/24 from 4 overs, while captain Assadollah Vala chipped in with 1/18 (4 overs), maintaining good control during the middle stages.
In reply, the Mariners Men fought hard in their chase but were restricted to 124/8 in 20 overs, falling just short of the target.
The Cassowaries bowlers maintained consistent pressure, backed by disciplined fielding, to prevent the Mariners from building decisive partnerships.
The match remained evenly poised heading into the final overs, but the Cassowaries held their nerve to secure a well-earned victory.
Player of the Match was awarded to Hila Vare for his match-defining innings that brought the Cassowaries’ total to win.
