PNG Alert On Deadliest Disease Ebola

Countries around the world are on high alert following the Ebola outbreak out of West Africa.

In Papua New Guinea, the National Health Department, with support from the World Health Organization, is closely monitoring the situation.

 

PNG is also developing its laboratory capacity to detect any possible cases.

 

The current outbreak of Ebola in Western Africa is a concern around the world.

 

Health Authorities in Papua New Guinea are also on high alert to detect any possible cases.

 

According to a WHO fact sheet on Ebola, PNG has never had any Ebola cases. But the symptoms of Ebola are similar to other diseases that may occur in Papua New Guinea, such as malaria.

 

Other symptoms include, fever, headache, diarrhoea, vomiting, weakness, stomach pain and lack of appetite.

 

Those who have travelled to West Africa in the past three weeks and have these symptoms, are to immediately report to a health care center.

 

Ebola is one of the deadliest diseases in the world, and kills in just a few weeks. As many as 90 per cent of those who contracts it, die.

 

Ebola is a virus that affects the blood system, and is highly contagious. It is transmitted through contact with blood, sweat, saliva, semen or other body fluids, however, it is not airborne.

 

The public are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from this deadly disease. Washing your hands, and disinfecting your surroundings with detergents are some of the measures involved in protecting yourself.
