Fourth International Pacific Island Women Conference

Women in correctional institutions around the Pacific are in Port Moresby for the fourth International Pacific Island Women Conference.

This morning, Prime Minister Peter O&rsquO’Neill officially opened the conference at the Bomana Correctional Service Training College.

In his keynote address, Mr O&rsquO’Neill welcomed participants from other Pacific Island countries, stating PNG is prepared to share its experience in building, supporting and improving working conditions for women in correctional institutions.

The conference will see women discuss, share ideas and find a way forward for women in dealing with issues in their institutions.

Meanwhile, Mr O&rsquO’Neill said correctional institutions around the country will be boosted with K2 million funding from the government. This will fall in line with the government’s intention for a total review of the department’s structure.

This will see the increase of recruits from 150 to 450 starting next year. The conference is themed as 'Strengthening the Partnership of Correctional Women in the Pacific'.
