Ramu Villages Told To Turn To Agriculture

People of Rai Coast near Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk Refinery, have been urged to return to agriculture activities and not to depend much on mining benefits.

This was the call made by Plant Pathologist Yak Namaliu from the PNG Coconut Cocoa Institute (PNGCCI) in Madang.

Mr. Namaliu said there are alternatives in rice, cocoa and coconut for locals to develop and benefit greatly.

He said Ramu NiCo mine activities will shut down after 20 years of production and people should consider that fact.

“Any forthcoming business opportunities will be slim because the Project is into production, and there are targeted business spin-offs available,” Mr. Namaliu said.

“Rice, cocoa, coconut and other cash crops are able to grow locally and if people can put their heads down on the soil, then they can earn more,” he added.

Meanwhile Ramu NiCo and PNGCCI will officially launch the new cocoa hybrid nursery in the Rai Coast district on Saturday 26th April 2014, for farmers in the area.
