Rebels Crowned Champions

Kimbe 7s reigning kings, the Rebels, have been crowned Brothers 40th Anniversary 7s Champions.

Rebels were a class above the rest, igniting Bava Park with their own style of union action.

The team will go in as favorites in the upcoming Capital Rugby Union 7s tournament, which is set to kick off this weekend.

Having the support from the Morobe Community, the Hammerheads had one thing in mind, and that was to nail the tournament, and walk away with the spoils.

They were the sentimental favourites, and brought with them, players under the mentorship of former PNG Pukpuk, Aiem Pilokos, from Morobe Rugby Union.

They went in as underdogs for this game against the favourites, Kimbe Rebels.

The Rebels took the field still ‘burning the flame’ from the recently held, Kimbe 7s Championships.

They were true to form, breaking the deadlock in the opener, while the Hammerheads managed only once to score an unconverted try toward the end of the allocated 14 minutes game time.

Hammerheads bowed out at 12 points to 5, seeing Rebels advance to the final playoff against the SLS Cowboys.

The Cowboys, mostly made up of the University Piggies, broke the Defence outfit in the semi playoff.

They showed character, but weren’t able to go past the experienced Rebels outfit.

Eventually Cowboys went down 36-10, while Rebels walked away K10, 000 richer, taking the cup with them.

In the plate final, the Black Orchids team from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, beat the Crusaders 36-5.

Daru Stingrays defeated the University outfit 19-14 in the Bowl final, while Nova tucked away the shield from Gulf 27-7 points.

In the women’s division, the Southern Chiefs finished on top with the Cup, against the Harlies.

Sisters took the plate, and Defence walked home with the bowl after leaving Nova, scoreless.
