Questions On Poor Festival Preparations

Questions were raised today on whether PNG was prepared to host the fifth Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival, to be held in Port Moresby next month.

One concern raised was the non-participation of corporate entities in this festival, and the poor construction of the events village just outside the National Museum.

Wabag Open MP, Robert Ganim, demanded answers from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Boka Kondra, on various subjects related to the preparation works for this festival.

Mr Ganim was concerned that the people and government of PNG were not informed earlier of their role to host the festival, when it was first announced four years ago in. He asked why the corporate sector would not participate in this festival, and blamed the committee for poor organization.

Tourism Minister, Boka Kondra, blamed the government for releasing funds late, and managed to provide some explanation as to why the corporate sector would not take part in the festival.

Member Ganim also pointed out the work done on the events village, saying that they seem to have been unplanned and on an ad hoc basis.

To this, Member Kondra said no permanent structures were built there because the land belonged to the National Museum, and the temporary structures will be pulled down after the festival is completed.

He also said each province was invited to send 30 participants to this festival, and it was the prerogatives of each governor, to get their provinces to the festival come June.
