Banking and postal issues in Kikori district have finally been solved. The Kikori people of Western Province will no longer travel to other provinces to bank, or use postal services.
This was made possible when a new BSP rural bank and a post office was opened in their district.
The project was initiated, developed and delivered to them through a tri-partnership with Petroleum Resource Kutubu (PRK), BSP and PNG Post. PRK is subsidiary of MRDC.
Those new facilities commenced construction last August and were funded by PRK at a cost of K10 million, through its community trust fund.
Nato said, amongst the many issues that supported the project, he wanted to see a saving culture in the community, and had encouraged people to venture into small businesses.
The services pave opportunities for locals to participate in the economic development.
Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, who was also present during the opening acknowledged the hardship of Kikori people and applauded the bank set-up.
Land owner payments can now be produced in Kirori. Previously, the people would travel to Kerema in Gulf, Moro in Southern Highlands, and even Port Moresby to access these services.
Another phase of the project includes independent water and sewerage treatment, and a power generation plant.
