Maru Marine Celebrates 30th Anniversary

A locally-owned and operated company in Daru has gone global. Maru Marine Ltd. in Daru, Western Province hosted its 30th Anniversary and another successful business year.

It is the first seafood factory in the Country to export seafood products internationally. It was another milestone for Maru Marines with the celebration of its 30th anniversary.

 

Mr. Meremi Maina first started the company in 1984, after retiring from Western District Seafood. The dingy that lies on top of the roof of the entrance, is a reminder of the company’s humble beginnings. It was the first vessel used for fishing.

 

The locals displayed a rousing reception to commemorate the anniversary. The company is locally owned and operated. It has created employment opportunities for the locals, employing a total of 105 permanent staff.

 

The company promoted gender equality, employing 40 women. 10 made it to tertiary institutions and 95 of them were News grown school leavers. Also 6 staff of the company were awarded with certificates for their long service to the company by Mr. and Mrs. Maina.

 

The company has great incentive opportunities for all its employers and also, from the income made by the company, 10% of the profit is divided among all the workers.

 

Maru Marines is a local fishing company that has ventured and travelled through a successful journey of accomplishments. Maru Marines is the only and first company in Daru Western Province, in the South Fly district and PNG to export its local products domestically and internationally.

 

Most of the companies’ success and increase of income, is mainly from live lobster and Cray fish exports to Australia and America. The company is looking at extending its services to Asia and also becoming a global exporter of quality seafood distributor and live lobster exporter.

 

Mr Maina says, the key to running a successful business is by putting people first and yourself last.
