Improving justice for children in PNG

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Law and justice practitioners in Papua New Guinea are undergoing workshop training in Port Moresby, this week, aimed at further developing and enhancing their investigative and prosecuting skills, when dealing with crimes against children.

Participants are being taken through internationally renowned practices, used for collecting and obtaining evidence from children under sensitive circumstances.

The workshop is facilitated by the Papua New Guinea Royal Police Constabulary and the Office of the Public Prosecutor, in collaboration with the Queensland Police Service and Public Prosecutors.

The workshop aims to support participants by enhancing and improving the skills of investigators and prosecutors in PNG; and to bring interviewing and examining skills, up to the highest standards.

This is so that practitioners’ obtain evidence of the ‘highest quality’ from children and other victims of family and sexual violence.

Participants of the workshop include 20 prosecutors and 20 police officers; with sessions on child development, medical evidence in child sexual offences, interviewing and reducing trauma.

The workshop is funded by the Papua New Guinea-Australia Law and Justice PartnershipTransition Program and staged at the Grand Papua Hotel.
