Gahuku League aims to keep youths off the street

By Tere Alex – EMTV, Port Moresby

The Goroka National Park has come alive during the festive period, with footy action that’s never missed by rugby league-mad people of the Eastern Highlands Province.

So far, the Gahuku League remains the focal point for rugby league’s raw talents who want to make their mark in the provincial team, the Goroka Bintangor Lahanis.

24 teams have shown keen interest in this year’s competition, which includes old -timers Nagami Sharks, Gehamo Bulldogs, Kafuku Spiders, Kotuni Trouts, Hella Massey and Zogi Riders.

New kids on the block, Pisawara Eels, Gehatika Jets and the Pacific Warriors also show much promise.

The games unfolded over the weekend, which saw the crowd favourite being the match between Hela Massey and the Pacific Warriors. It was indeed a close encounter with a 6-5 win for Hela Massey.

Another game that took the spotlight was the Bulldogs-Jets match. Goroka Lahanis big guns Spiro Mikaive and George Abba led the Bulldogs to victory at 6-4.

Gahuku League interim president, Simo Kilepa noted the importance of the competition as it helps advocate and educate youth to be good role models in the community.

The competition was revived after three years with hopes to end in success

PNG Hunters Noel Zemming, Thompson Teteh and Adex Wera are products of the Gahuku League.
