AUSTRALIA SUPPORTS DROUGHT RELIEF EFFORTS IN WESTERN PROVINCE

Australia and Papua New Guinea are working together to deliver humanitarian assistance to drought-affected communities in North Fly, Western Province.
At the request of the PNG National Disaster Centre (NDC), the Australian Defence Force’s C-27J Spartan aircraft under the Defence Pacific Air Program is transporting up to 10 tonnes of supplies to Tabubil, with a number of flights expected over the coming days.
The cargo includes food items such as rice, flour, tinned fish, cooking oil, sugar and tea, as well as water filtration equipment. The items were procured by the Open Member for North Fly, James Donald MP, for communities experiencing prolonged drought conditions.
The NDC, provincial and district authorities will coordinate distribution to affected communities.
Minister for Health and Emergency Services, Hon. Dr Billy Joseph MP, welcomed the deliveries while visiting the Air Transport Wing this morning.
“This delivery demonstrates the Government of Papua New Guinea’s commitment to supporting communities affected by drought, and the value of our partnership with Australia. The National Disaster Centre, provincial authorities and local leaders will work together to ensure these vital supplies reach the people who need them most,” Minister Joseph said.
Minister Counsellor for Governance and Human Capital at the Australian High Commission, Madeleine Moss, said Australia remained committed to supporting PNG’s preparedness and response efforts.
“Australia is supporting Papua New Guinea’s response through practical assistance that helps communities access essential supplies. Working together, we can respond quickly and effectively to emerging challenges and support the resilience of affected communities,” Ms Moss said.
The assistance reflects the enduring PNG-Australia Partnership and a shared commitment to supporting communities through practical, locally led responses.
