Bulolo MP calls on students not to double scholarships

By Julie Badui Owa – EMTV News, Lae

Bulolo MP Sam Basil told students from his District studying at the Balob Teacher’s College not to accept corporate scholarships if they are already under the Government’s HECAS scholarship.

Basil said this today after presenting a cheque of K305, 000 for fifty students who will be studying at the college this year.

The Bulolo MP and Minister for Communications, Information Technology and Energy said the money can be used to cater for other students who have been left out.

Since 2011, the District has paid fees for almost two hundred students who have registered and will begin classes next week.

Principal for Balob Teacher’s College, Jerry Hendingao, told the students to inform the administration if they want to remain on Hecas Government, or under Corporate Scholarship.

“There are a handful of students who are double-dipping. They are on a corporate scholarship and then they go and get on a MP scholarship and then they (also) get scholarship from HECAS,” Principal Hendingo said.

Mr. Hendingao said the students will be screened after the registration to ensure they are on one scholarship.

Meanwhile, these students under the Bulolo District Scholarship will serve the district for five years after graduating from the college.

Deputy Principal for Academic, Hilary Siamuli challenged the students to make use of the privilege and serve the district.
