Police and Prison officers have mounted a search for more than 10 prisoners who escaped from Lae’s Buimo prison this afternoon.
The escape happened during visiting hours.
At least one of the prisoners who attempted to escape was reported to have been caught and confined.
The others managed to make it out of the prison boundaries. It is understood at least three were injured during the escape.
There has been mounting tension within Buimo Prison. On Thursday, prisoners reported that one inmate had died from a preventable illness.
This prompted protests calling on prison authorities to allow the media into the prison compound to see the unsanitary conditions.
This is the latest of several prison breakouts at Buimo.
Police and CS officers are currently searching the West Taraka area for the escapees.
