Eastern Highlands Villagers Shot and Burnt in Homes over Land Dispute

Police in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands Province are investigating land related deaths.

11 people were killed following disputes on early Thursday morning.

While investigations are continuing, communities want peace calling for justice to prevail.

There were 11 confirmed deaths: five members of the Ohneruka community, five from the Irafo villages and one was from Henganofi district.

The deaths resulted from gun shot wounds and fire burns.

The attacks were orchestrated in the early morning of Thursday at Onerunka village, Kainantu District .

It was a spillover from a dispute over the ownership of a piece of land on which a primary school was built at Irafo Village, Kainantu.

Onerunka Villager, Janne Kompane, told EMTV News that the Onerunka Community had taken victims of the fight.

The ambush resulted in 11 people killed.

INSERT: “ They shot people people and those that were shot in their homes and shelters were burnt with their dwellings. It was terrible. They even cut down the plants outside the home, ” Janne Kompane.

The bodies were laid to rest on Saturday in the Onerunka village.

Mr Kompane told EMTV News that the Kainantu district community is cooperating with Police officers with investigations.
