Magistrates from around Papua New Guinea met in the Nation’s capital to undergo a week long workshop in judgement writing skills that was delivered by the National Judicial College of Australia.
There is need for training and development within our legal sector in order to improve current competencies at all levels of the justice system in PNG.
The workshop was made possible by the PNG Judicial Women’s Association, the National Judicial College of Australia and the Australian Government.
Magistrate Laura Kuvi said, “Before I was a bit hesitant because I didn’t have any judicial writing training, and I didn’t know if I was going to address it the right way. After this training, I’d like to try writing judgements on the new legal issues that I’m facing.”
The judgement writing skills workshop focused on improving the delivery of ‘clear, impartial and timely written court judgements to resolve disputes and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.’
It is workshops like this that help with capacity building and service delivery, especially at a time when there are a number of new changes that are taking place within the legal sector.
