Lae Police zero in on suspects and illegal firearms, with community support

Lae Police have made a string of arrests during which weapons have been recovered.

One of the weapons was a pump action shotgun stolen from police during a robbery in Nadzab.

Police operations in Lae have relied on a network of contacts. They’ve gradually been fostering new relationships with the community and businesses.

This network has paid off with a smoother flow of information which has become crucial with the recent escape of more than 50 prisoners from Buimo jail.

The Lae Metropolitan command has been utilising the new arrangement of sector response units to track down and arrest suspects.

Yesterday, the units recovered a revolver at the Bumbu and Sipaia settlements.

Arrests have been made, with a semi automatic pistol found in the possession of one of the suspects.

Two of the suspects are wanted in connection to the Rabtrad robbery earlier this year.

Police have been on high alert since the prison break out two weeks ago. It is understood business in Lae were put on alert this morning after information was received of another possible armed robbery.

Meanwhile, Madang province is suffering from an increase in crime.

It is believed troublemakers forced out by tighter policing methods in Lae have fled to Madang, therefore causing the spike in crime.
