Baki Welcomes MPs promises on building Police stations and homes

Police Commissioner, Gari Baki has welcomed commitments by local MPs, to build houses and police stations for the Constabulary, in their electorates.

Commissioner Baki admitted that shortage in accommodation remains a challenging issue, in the constabulary.

But says those police stations, need to be gazetted by law, before they can be used for police duties.

The Commissioner made these remarks after members of Parliament presented development reports, on the work of the Law and Justice Sectors in their electorates, during the 2017 Leadership Summit in Port Moresby.

Baki said such partnerships with elected members can assist minimise the shortage in accommodation for police officers in the country.

For the construction of police stations, Baki said it is important they are gazetted by law, so that Police officers can be assigned to these stations.

One such project was conducted in the Kairiku-Hiri District, of Central province.

However, that station is yet to be gazetted as a police station.

Similar remarks were made by NCD and Central Divisional Commander, Sylvester Kalaut last month.

Commander Kalaut said as Port Moresby and Central province develops, there will be the need to build more Police stations to police these areas.

Shortage in accommodation is amongst the top ten challenges the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary tries to address every year.

But with the limited funds allocated to the Constabulary by the National Government, very little can be budgeted for maintenance or the construction of new houses.

While the police hierarchy is working on trying to improve housing for its members, there is a growing number of police officers living outside the designated Police barracks.
