Edevu Hydro Power Project Launched in the Central Province

A new hydro power project was launched today in the Central Province.

The Edevu Hydro Power Project is expected to generate 50 megawatts (MW) power to boost electricity supply to the Nation’s Capital.

The high-profile government delegation present included PNGs Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch, and the recently sidelined Minister for Public Enterprise & State Investments, William Duma.

When completed, the hydro project will give a much needed boost to Port Moresby’s power supply.

PNG Power will then buy power through Power Purchase Certifications from the company, PNG Hydro.

Project Manager, Charles Gubei, said negotiations on the project began in 2009 and has taken eight years to get to this stage.

Central Governor, Kila Haoda, said as far as investment’s go, Central Province has remained a spectator and that needed to be change.

Kairuku-Hiri MP, Peter Isoaimo, welcomed the project, and called on the government to facilitate, and ensure equal participation for landowners.

William Duma, who attended as the Minister for Public Enterprise & State Investments, said the project was an opportunity for all to work together and ensure that benefits are given to landowners.

The major funding of K630 million has come from Hunan Provincial Government of China, and A-G Investments.

The project is said to be a giant leap forward for the people of Koiari LLG. It is expected to bring in basic services that have been missing for the past 40 years.
