Wewak Police Investigation

Member for Angoram Salio Waipo, was arrested in Wewak last Friday, for allegedly Aiding, and Abiding a Sorcerer.

The arrest was made by the Port Moresby Investigation Team, led by Director of Crimes, Chief Superintendent Donald Yomasombi.

Among other investigations, the Team is currently gathering information on the raid at a Compound in Angoram, by rouge policemen in December last year.

The incident had left this community in Angoram, traumatized. This is what the Investigating Team discovered in their visit; 24 houses were burnt down and the police also allegedly looted cash and personal items at the Ex–service Camp in Angoram District.

The victims recalled their ordeal on how the police attacked them on that fatal day. One of the victims was Tom Brooks Kum. He told the Investigation Team that he was brutally bashed, and all his days’ takings from his trade store were stolen. They even burnt his store.

Tom says to date; he doesn’t know why he and his family members were attacked, and he wants those responsible be arrested. The community says it has lost trust in the disciplined force, as the actions of the rogue policemen were unbecoming of men, who are entrusted to protect citizens.

On December 2013, Policemen from Wewak under the Command of Sawakar Kasieng, the illegal police ID24 Unit went to the Ex-Service camp, where they abused and assaulted villagers while searching for escapees.

Eye-witnesses and victims said the policemen fired shots, and threatened them at gun-point. They watched as the policemen assaulted villagers, and stole cash, store goods and burnt down houses.

The policemen accused the villagers of harboring prison escapees, and hiding illegal firearms.  PSC Kasieng was also charged for the illegal raid of Kawanumbo village on 7th December, 2013, and is now out on bail with 13 other policemen.

The Investigation Team upon receiving the information from the villagers, have progressed their work. They have re-arrested a member of the illegal police ID24, for breaching the National Court Bail Condition. It’s alleged that he threatened two females, who were witnesses to another rape incident involving Wewak police.
