U.S. Embassy Celebrate 4th Of July

Today is the 4th of July, an important day on the American calendar.

The United States celebrates its 238th year since declaring its’ independence from Great Britain in 1776.

The U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby celebrated the Fourth of July with a beach-themed “Surfin’ USA Beach BBQ” party, also celebrating the theme of “Our Oceans”.

A “Surfin’ USA”-themed 4th of July party was held last night at the Gateway Hotel.

The party was attended by a host of heavies, including President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama… Well not exactly the real deal, but life-size cardboard cuttings of the two!

In his speech, U.S. Ambassador Walter North made reference to the recent political events of PNG, stating there are important lessons on liberty Americans are still working to perfect.

He was also delighted that the 4th of July was being celebrated during the ongoing Melanesian festival of Arts and Culture.

Revisiting the theme of “Our Oceans,” earlier on in the day, Walter North outlined our oceans’ span as three quarters of the planet.

This means it is the most important shared resource, connecting people physically, culturally, and spiritually.

PNG’s Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato was also present at last night’s events to signify the ongoing bilateral relations between the two nations.
