Tusbab Secondary Deputy Principal Attacked by Student

Madang’s Tusbab Secondary School Deputy Principal Mr Timothy Daun was attacked at around midday yesterday after he tried to intervene a fight between Grade 10 male students.

Mr Daun told EMTV from his hospital bed that a Grade 10 male student attacked him. He said this is the first time such incident occurred at the school, adding the alleged male student was a problem student from Madang Christian Academy who was transferred to Tusbab.

Daun said earlier yesterday morning, he had dispatched a number of male students hanging around outside of their classrooms. He told them to attend classes as they were mulling around trying to start a fight. While others obeyed the instructions, this particular student refused.

After two attempts, Mr Daun slapped him to get him into the class and away from starting a fight.

According to Daun, the alleged student went into the classroom but came out again swearing. Daun said the morning’s incident has reached the student’s father, who came to the school and talked with him. It was then, the student attached Daun with a knife.

Daun was rushed to Modilon General Hospital for treatment. He is now admitted at the Intermediate ward, receiving medical treatment and will go in for an operation.

Meanwhile, Daun said a disciplinary actions like termination of the student at this time would not be possible.

This is because the school has no board in place since 2013 and would not be able to make that decision.

The school administration however, can only give an open transfer to the student concerned.

Police have been notified of the problem and are investigating.
