Tari Man beaten by Police, dies in Port Moresby

The Pori Community in Erima and 9-mile are mourning the death of a young man who was allegedly beaten by police yesterday.

Eye witnesses say the man was brutally beaten, leaving bruises all over his body.

Relatives say late Lincoln was picked up with two other suspects at Gordon’s market, by a police unit. He was then beaten, before he was taken to Saraga Police Station and forced to leave.

“He was beaten and taken around by police then forced to escaped but could not run,” said an eye witness Pastor Michael Andrew.

Andrew and others rushed the victim to the Port Moresby General Hospital for treatment after he became unconscious.

A Community leader says reports will be compiled and presented to Police Commissioner, Gary Baki, the Police Minister, and the Government.

“We want the police hierarchy to look into this matter and discipline these rogue police officers,” said Thomas Yago.

Community leaders want the police hierarchy to respond swiftly on this matter.

The Police Internal Affairs Unit is aware of the incident, with the NCD command yet to make an official statement.

The deceased is 30 years old, and is from the Pori District in the Hela Province.
