Sogeri 9’s Rugby League Grand Final

The Sogeri Community, on the outskirts of Port Moresby, is heading in a new direction in sports after hosting its 9s rugby league grand final for the first time on Sunday.

Sponsors of the competition were also there to witness the game. Up to 8 teams competed in 4 final categories with Cup Final being the main event.

 

This year was marked one of the special years for all Sogeri residents, as it was the first of its kind to host a rugby league grand final, on home soil, as it attracted sponsors from in and around the Nation’s Capital.

 

Sogeri Rugby League saw up to eight teams go head to head as they battled on the field. Several teams in the competition came from Port Moresby, to show off their skills and talents.

 

8 Teams competing in 4 games clashed on the field of Sogeri, as they played for Pennant, Plate, bowl and Cup finals. To start of the games, Sagi Brothers played against Vakasu Rangers for the Pennat winner.

 

It was a tough match between the two teams, but with great speed and momentum from the Sagi Brother, Vakasu Souths got ditched 12 – 8, Sagi Brother.

 

In the bowl match, Parthen Ice took on Voriata Ranger with Parthen Ice dispatching over victory win, with 16 – 12, Parthen Ice.

 

On the Plate final, two local teams, Country brothers battled against Farm Boy, with great skills and techniques used. Farm Boy ran away with 18 points victory leaving Country Brother with 14 points.

 

In the main and final match, Hooks Tiger took on Fair Dina, but in the end, it was the home team, Hooks Tigers that took the cup winning victory over Fair Dina, 20-18, Hooks Tiger. All teams walked away with a price each in the end.

 

Among the few corporate sponsors like Kokoda Trail Hotel Operations Manger Ben Burgess, Peter Cumun was the main sponsor of the tournament of the Sogeri 9s Rugby League.
