Royal Australian Navy: “Operation Render Safe” In Torokina

The Royal Australian Navy ships have completed their survey operations in preparation for Operation Render Safe in Torokina, south-west of Bougainville.

The Australian Defence Force’s Operation Render Safe is a Regional Program to remove unexploded bombs in the area.

The special operation began upon the invitation of the Autonomous Bougainville Government as lives have been lost during sudden explosions.

The hydrographical survey operations were conducted by the Australian Navy Ships HMAS BENALLA and HMAS SHEPPARTON  to assess the beach shoreline capacity to handle equipment moved from ships offshore to onshore locations to support the special operation.

As the operation was at the request of the ABG government, Steven Suako, the Member for Torokina in the ABG House of Representatives, welcomed the ADF’s conduct of Operations Render Safe in his electorate.

Mr Suako was briefed on the operations by Commanding Officer of BENALLA, Mick Rigby, and also observed the survey operations.

It gave the local MP a clear picture in terms of disposing unexploded ordnance or military artilleries.

The locals also welcomed the operation to remove all unexploded bombs and artilleries as they have lost loved ones during unexpected explosions.

The results of the Render Safe Operations are currently in Australia. The results of these surveys will be shared with the PNG National Maritime Safety Authority and the ABG Government.

It is anticipated that the results will provide accurate charts of the Bougainville waters.
