Protests Called Off In Interest Of Businesses And Residents

The police hierarchy has called off the planned protest march scheduled for tomorrow, after NCD command announced the approval for the march earlier today.

Acting Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki said the chain of the command in the force has been directed this afternoon not to entertain such an activity and disband individuals and groups involved.

Mr. Vaki said this is for the best interest of the residents and business houses in the nation’s capital, Port Moresby.

Acting Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki said the planned protest that was approved by the Metropolitan Superintendent earlier today, has been called off.

He said he met with the Superintendent and others in the command chain and decided to call it off, saying it was in the best interest of the residents and business houses in the nation’s capital.

Mr. Vaki said any individual or group involved will be disbanded.

He supported freedom of speech and expression; however, he said the environment is not conducive enough to host such an activity.

Just a week into office, Acting Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki is confident in his appointment by the NEC and the directives issued under his command.

He said there is no faction in the force.

He admitted that there was a minority who were opposing his appointment; however, he said this group played a very little role in the force.
