PNG’s Magic Mothers

Every morning before the break of dawn, a group of mothers set out to ensure the general cleanliness of the city.

They are passionate about the work they do, but have expressed concern over public attitudes towards their work.

They say that even though they are paid to do the job, the public must be mindful when littering.

It’s the break of dawn and amidst the busy morning traffic, women line the roadside to ensure the city is spic and span.

They wake up as early as 6 o’clock in the morning for their daily routine.

Armed with their magic wands and brooms, they set to work to ensure the city is appealing to the public eye.

But often their efforts go unnoticed by the public. Annie Joe has worked with PNG Gardener for a year cleaning the road side.

She said the general cleanliness of the city should be everyone’s responsibility. Safety is a concern but to them, the cleanliness of the city is their ultimate priority.

They have learned to adapt to the speeding traffic. Sadly, Annie says, some of her colleagues were unfortunate.

It is a paid job that they do, but the least we can do as the general public is to be mindful that every time we litter, somebody has to clean it up.
