PNG UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY TEAM GIVES BACK TO MADANG THROUGH CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology soccer team volunteered to help clean parts of Madang Town following the conclusion of 2026 Intervarsity Soccer Tournament hosted by Divine Word University. While many teams leave after a sporting tournament, the Papua New Guinea University of Technology soccer team chose to leave a lasting impact by volunteering their time to help clean parts of Madang Town.

Yesterday morning, the 46-member team conducted a clean-up along the beachfront from Nabis Inn towards Coronation Drive, including the surrounding areas where they had been accommodated over the past five days.

Team Manager Humphrey Manaseh said the initiative was the team’s way of showing appreciation to the people of Madang for their hospitality during the tournament.

“We heard many good things about Madang through the media, and when we arrived, we saw for ourselves that the town has changed,” Mr Manaseh said.

“The town is clean, and the restrictions on chewing betel nut and smoking in public areas have created a very good impression.”

Mr Manaseh said although the team did not reach the finals, they were proud to make a positive contribution before returning to Lae.

“There are 46 of us, and even though we didn’t make it to the finals, we are happy to contribute positively to Madang Province before we go back,” he said.

He added that the clean-up was a small gesture to help preserve Madang’s reputation as the “Beautiful Madang” and to thank the province for hosting the tournament.

On behalf of the people of Madang, the Madang Provincial Events Committee (MPEC) thanked the PNG University of Technology team for their thoughtful initiative and meaningful contribution to keeping the province clean.

MPEC also wished all 46 students and staff members a safe journey back to Lae.
