PNG Boxing Union Ends Fight Night

PNG Boxing Union ended the last of its Fight Nights at the Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby.

The 4-week tournament had attracted a total of 26 fighters, featuring 6 female fighters from the PNG Boxing squad.

Ten fighters took the ring last night, wrapping up the first-of-its-kind event, “Fight Nights”. The fight nights were staged to expose most of the young fighters to a higher level of competition as well as prepare them for upcoming fights in the boxing calender.

Kicking off the night, 2009 Women’s Gold Feather weight in the 51kg category, Jacklyn Wangi, in the red corner, took on Diane Kapu in Blue. Both boxers levelled the ring with their jabs and counterpunches, but it was Jacklyn Wangi on her step, who took out the bout.

In the Women’s 57kg fight, Women’s Light Weight Bronze medallist, Joan Maipa, forced a seasoned right jab to 2013 NCD Champion, Annette Kora.

The fight stringing to the wire in the 4th bout, tested the endurance of both fighters in the ring. In the Men’s bouts, in the 64kg category, 2012 PNG Games Gold medallist, Andrew Aisaga, bounced back from a shaky round 1 against 2013 PNG Champion, Chicko Emmanuel.

All fighters are up for a select side in an exhibition fight against a Queensland side in the coming weeks.
