Morobe Provincial Government Assists Church

The Morobe Provincial Government has pumped money into bailing out the Evangelical Lutheran Church from its financial crisis.

According to the Governor’s Office, ELCPNG has serious financial and management issues, affecting service delivery to nearly all districts.

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, a Lutheran strong man, made the presentation at Ampo, the ELCPNG Headquarter in the Province.

This move by the Morobe Provincial Government to bail out the predominant church in Morobe Province isn’t surprising for the Lae Public.

According to a statement from the Governor’s office, the help comes after Governor Naru met with senior members of the Lutheran group. Also in the statement are reasons why the Morobe Provincial government continues to give money to the church.

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru defends continuous support for the Evangelical Lutheran Church saying the church provides health and education services. “We are supporting Health, Education and Infrastructure,” says Governor Naru.

But, the predominant church in Morobe has the number power to gain support from those who have the funds to help. This follows a series of financial assistance payments made to local parishes and circuits in every district that Governor Naru has visited since his election.

In Fincshaffen, the Morobe Provincial government handed out cash to people attending a conference. At the Lutheran synod in Karkar this year, cash was handed out to those stranded on the Island.

Yesterday, Lutheran Bishop, Giegere Wenge, accepted the funding inside a closed-door council meeting. It’s understood that important commercial issues regarding the business arms of the church were discussed inside, but information hasn’t been released.
