Plans Underway for Trade Opportunities Between Qatar and PNG

Papua New Guinea wants to work more closely with Qatar in areas of capacity building and investment opportunities.

This, according to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill when meeting with Qatar’s Prime Minister, Finance Minister and other senior Government Officials, on his return from the APEC Summit in Vietnam.

He said from humble beginnings, Qatar has diversified its economic base better than most resource-focused economies around the world.

And, while oil and gas remain the cornerstone of its economy, Qatar has made inroads into downstream processing and other energy-related fields, as well as leveraging its resources boom to expand the tourism sector, and making substantial investment in agriculture around the world.

Prime Minister O’Neill said as an emerging economy, Papua New Guinea must take advantage of new opportunities to expand, and be resilient to cycles dependent on world energy prices.

A delegation from Kumul Consolidated Holdings, other Government agencies, and the private sector, are expected to meet with Qatar to discuss further opportunities on offer.
