Numbos’ Application To Transfer Refused

An application to transfer Mobile Squad Commander, Steven Numbos from the Bomana Jail, outside Port Moresby to the Waigani police Cells, was refused by the Waigani District Court.

Senior Magistrate, Mekeo Gauli rejected the application saying, Police Cells are not places for detaining persons charged with serious crimes.

Numbos was charged for Wilful Murder and Armed Robbery under the Criminal Code Act, in December 2016.

His lawyer, told the court this morning that Numbos received threats from other inmates, and his life is at risk at Bomana Jail.

A handwritten letter from a Correctional Officer, was submitted to the magistrate Gauli. However, magistrate Gauli said the letter was not signed, and did not have a letterhead of the Correctional Services.

“Who in this time, would accept such an unsigned letter?” Magistrate Gauli asked the lawyer.

The police prosecution objected to the application stating that threats, and medical reasons should not be used as grounds for applications in court.

Instead, they submitted that Numbos be kept in a separate cell.
