Last Thursday, young constable Clifford Yembiningi was stabbed at Gordons Market; he died later at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
While investigations into his death continue, police already have one suspect behind bars.
According to police reports, the late officer was stabbed by a drunken man while trying to get on a PMV back to Bomana Police College.
Yangoru-Saussia MP and Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Richard Maru condemned the killing of the officer. Mr Maru said the Gordons market must be shut down permanently.
“Many people have lost their lives at the market; it is a haven for thugs and a sore eye to the image of Port Moresby,” Mr Maru said.
Gordons Market, being a major market in the city, has been supporting a large informal sector population for years. It is also, however, a home to petty criminals.
“Women and girls are the main victims of harassment at the market. I call on the Governor for NCD and the government to support me in closing down the market and relocating it to a much more safe area far from settlements,” he said.
