Mekeo: Gagaifua Village Washed Away By Flood

A total of 17 houses with more than 300 people, are affected in the West Mekeo area in Central Province.

Central Provincial Disaster Assessment team led by Provincial Disaster Coordinator, Duty Pae, said this is the worst flood to be experienced by the villagers.

The Gagaifua village was completely washed away by flood waters, when the Angabanga River bank flooded.

The disaster team visited the area over the weekend, and reported that the people are now displaced but are responding well by resettling to higher grounds.

A Catholic Church building, elementary school, Chief Haus, a trade store and the village cemetery, were washed away with coffins.

Joe Aisaisa from Gagaifua said the village people lost their livestock, banana gardens, kaukau gardens and betel nut trees during the flood.

The affected villagers are surviving on the leftover betel nut and banana.
