Independent Power Providers To Supply Power

The Independent Public Business Corporation and PNG Power will be inviting Independent Power Providers to supply power in Madang.

This was announced by Public Enterprise Minister, Ben Micah, during the Parliament sitting in Port Moresby today.  Mr. Micah said, this was a measure to rectify the low shedding experienced in Madang, and the other Highlands provinces.

Madang province has been without power for two weeks. This, after a power pylon at Sausi in the Usino Bundi electorate, was uprooted and heavily damaged following the flooding of the Ramu River last month.

The Madang Power Station has resorted to using diesel run generators to supply electricity on a load-shedding basis. This has affected Business Houses, schools, Hospitals and the general public.

East and West New Britain, Morobe and East Sepik will also have Independent Power Providers to supply power. There is a team currently working on the construction of a twelve kilometre bypass to restore power from Ramu into Madang.

Power supply in Madang is expected to return to normal next week.
