Father of Three Sentenced to Two Years Imprisonment

A father of three has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for being in possession of an offensive weapon.

28-year-old Samson Dasi from Kiunga town, in the Western province, pled guilty for being in possession of a homemade pistol, before the Boroko District Court today.

Police confiscated the weapon from Dasi on January 11, 2017, at the Gordons Market.

Dasi appeared in person in court today.

Magistrate Maristella Painap, convicted Dasi on the grounds that he was not a first time offender.

Magistrate Painap reduced the maximum jail term of five years to only two years, because Dasi showed remorse for his actions.

Police prosecution submitted that the courts should give Dasi tough penalty as he was not a first time offender.

Dasi was previously convicted of attempted rape and had served six months at the Bomana prison.

Magistrate Painap told Dasi that she hopes his sentence of two years will stop him from engaging in illegal activities.
